Thirty-two political parties have signed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) electoral code of conduct ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for September 29 this year.
In his remarks on Wednesday at the signing before the Christian Council of Lesotho, IEC Commissioner Tṧoeu Petlane said the move was an indication of the parties’ commitment to free, fair and peaceful elections.
Petlane noted that the electoral body was aspiring for a process that does not violate others’ rights during the election campaigns or any other processes prior and during the elections.
He said the signed document outlines conduct during elections, further expressing hope that the pledge will go a long way in attaining the intended election results.
For his part, Commissioner Mphasa Mokhochane indicated that the upcoming elections are held six years after 2017, thus giving a year extension due to various reasons.
“The electoral commission will on July 27 announce party candidates who will be contesting for the upcoming elections,” Mokhochane said.
He added that IEC is aware of some youth on different media platforms vowing to do all they can to stop the elections.
He further urged leaders to educate young people about the importance of elections in a democratic dispensation.
On behalf of the political parties, Democratic Congress (DC) leader, Mathibeli Mokhothu affirmed their commitment to the successful implementation of the electoral code.
He called on the electoral commission to ensure a clean voters list in order to minimise complaints during elections.
