20 years of Nedbank Mohokare Golf Classic

By Mateliso Phulane

The managing director of Nedbank Lesotho, Nkau Matete, says it has been through respect, professionalism, common purpose and frequent meeting that their 20 years’ relationship with Mohokare Golf Classic Tournament is still firm.

Speaking at a press conference on the Nedbank Mohokare Golf Classic Tournament in Maseru this week, Matete said the bank was still committed, not only to the game of golf, but also to the partnership it has had with Mohokare Golf Classic.

“Established 20 years ago, this golf tournament is a two-day affair, experienced over two golf courses on either side of the Mohokare River.

“The Classic remains a wonderful platform for sportsmanship, friendship and business networking for participants, sponsors and supporters alike.

“The Golf Classic is a key attraction for sports tourism and hospitality in the country, as it has always hosted players and visitors alike locally and from the nearby SADC countries, including South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini,” Matete said.

The tournament sees golf players and patrons from several Southern African states grace Lesotho to trade skills and network on a two-day programme culminating in an evening gala dinner for prize-giving.

The Nedbank Mohokare Golf Classic, like many other sporting activities, took an involuntary hiatus in 2020 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. However, as conditions eased, the organising stakeholders announced the return to greens, on an unfamiliar part of the year, that is March 2022.

“This was welcomed with excitement by golfers and revellers alike, as the golf drought had been too extended. This year sees the Nedbank Mohokare take its rightful place in October. The dates for this edition will be Friday 20 to Saturday 21. The tournament will take place at both the Maseru Golf Course and the Ladybrand Golf Course.

“Guided by the Mohokare Golf Organising Committee, this year’s edition is a milestone one as it is also a celebration of 20 years since the first tee off back in 2003. Nedbank Lesotho is delighted to have been a part of this journey for many years and looks forward to an exiting day of golfing, business networking, collaborations and indeed a way to generate proceeds that are dedicated to supporting noble initiatives such as Lesotho Breast Cancer Association,” he indicated.

Nedbank Lesotho has set aside M350 000 for this year’s event.

Registration for participation opened this week.
