IN SUMMARY: Majoro declares total lockdown

Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro on Tuesday announced that Lesotho was going to be placed under a “total lockdown” to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Neighbouring state, South Africa, where a more contagious variant of Covid-19 has been identified, is already under lockdown level three. More than 33 000 people have succumbed to Covid-19 in South Africa.

Announcing the new measures, Majoro said: “We are reverting to a total lockdown for two weeks until the 27th of January”.

The new lockdown comes into effect on 12:00am Thursday January 14, 2021 and ends on January 27, 2021. It entails the following:

  • Supermarkets or essential services shall operate from 8:00am to 4:00pm;
  • Agricultural activities are allowed, petrol stations shall be open for 24 hours.
  • Movement is restricted to those seeking food or health services and migrant workers.
  • The number of passengers will be limited in public transport.
  • Funerals are super-spreaders and are now limited to family members only and a maximum of 10 people and the deceased should be buried within three days of death.
  • Vaccinations will commence in April by vaccinating 44,0000 people
  • By the end of the the year, the expectation is that 1.5 million citizens will be vaccinated.
  • The ministry of health will inform the public of the roll-out strategy.
  • The relevant ministers will make the necessary pronouncements tomorrow.
  • A 7:00pm to 6:00am Curfew is in place.
