Ministry of forestry loses project

By Motselisi Sekonyela

The ministry of forestry, range and soil conservation, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) officially closed the Global Environment Fund (GEF)- supported Project, Reducing Vulnerability from Climate Change in Foothills, Lowlands and Lower Senqu River Basin (RVCC), on Friday last week.

The event was held at a local hotel in the presence of the Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation minister, Motlohi Maliehe and the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Nessie Golakai.

The five-year RVCC project which was launched in 2016, also shared its achievements and challenges with the Project Steering Committee and other stakeholders.

Climate change is negatively affecting ecosystems and livelihoods of local communities living in rural parts of Lesotho.

In this regard, the GEF-supported RVCC was launched in 2016 to mainstream climate risk considerations into the land rehabilitation programme of Lesotho for improved ecosystem resilience and reduced vulnerability of livelihoods to climate shocks.

It was implemented by the ministry of forestry, range and soil conservation in close collaboration the ministry of agriculture and food security and UNDP. The RVCC project supported the integration of climate change adaptation into national and sub-national land use planning and decision-making processes.
