One of the goals of Road Fund is to enhance road user safety, through funding of safety programmes implemented by the Road Safety Department. As such, about 70 drivers were trained on defensive driving K53 standard, and they recently all graduated at a ceremony held at Avani Maseru.
In an interview with the Principal Instructor of Road Safety Department Ms. Neo Khoaele, the aim of the training was to equip drivers with defensive driving skills in order for them to drive to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around them as well as actions of others.
She explained that the trainees were drawn from government departments, private sector, public transport, driving schools and those who are not employed. “All of them came for the training in order to be better drivers, so that they can enhance their skills and be better either to advance in their careers or to get employed, for those who are not yet employed” she reiterated.
She said Road Safety Department usually publicize the opportunities through various media channels, so that all interested Basotho can partake in these trainings.
According to her, the requirements for one to attend the trainings is to have a driver’s license of two years and above. She said in terms of costs, participants are expected to pay only the registration fee of M500.00 while other costs are borne by the Road Fund.
She concluded by thanking the Road Fund for sponsoring the training, as they have seen over the years that drivers with defensive driving skills are much more skilled and observant while driving than ordinary drivers.
The graduation ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport Mr. Mokherane Tšasanyane. Other Officials who spoke at the ceremony to congratulate the graduates were the Road Safety Department Director Dr. Kinini Mathews, The Traffic Commissioner Mrs. ‘Mathabo Tšosane and the Road Fund Chief Executive Officer represented by Ms. ‘Mafako Lepholisa.
The Road Fund set aside M460,000.00 for this activity for the 2018/2019 financial year.
